Mark has been involved with the City of Walker for the past 13 years. He was appointed to the Planning Commission from 2005. In 2011, he was elected as a 3rd Ward City Commissioner. Mark was elected Mayor of the City of Walker in 2013 and 2017, a position he currently holds.
Mark grew up in South Walker on a small farm and learned to work hard and enjoy the nature and green space. Mark has a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Calvin College, a Masters of Management degree from Aquinas College. Mark also graduated from MSU’s Michigan Political Leadership Program. Mark and his wife Kris, reside in Walker with their three children: Elaina, Olivia, and Blake.
Mark is a self-employed health care consultant. His consulting practice focuses on process improvement and strategic planning. It is in owning his own small business that Mark has learned the importance of strategic planning, financial responsibility, and accountability.
As Mayor Mark worked to reduce long term debt and increase jobs. Mark also played a significant role in the expansion of the bike trails network including the bike and pedestrian tunnel under Lake Michigan Drive. Significant improvements in the parks included an amphitheater for concerts, new basketball courts and new playground equipment. Under Mark’s leadership road conditions both improved and were expanded.
